During this part of the course we use an instrument to think about knowledge, starting from a communication perspective, according to the definition of Michel Serres as a “total human fact”. This instrument is the notion of symbolic order. It is an approach to the analysis of human communication. For this we have exposed a set of concepts that are intended to be useful to analyze, verify, and even criticize everything that is played in the domain of communication. To introduce the notion of symbolic order, we have started from an example practiced in ancient times when a contract was made between individuals or between groups: the fragmentation of an object… where the concept of symbol comes from.

— What is important in this definition is that each individual is defined by others and not by himself. Each one is defined in its relation to the other, since each one is defined as the contracting party of a pact and an alliance. Is it possible to verify in our days, situations in which we are defined by our relationship to others and not by ourselves? What positive elements do we find for ethical reflection to be defined in this way? What negative elements can be glimpsed?

The law-promise-recognition categories are a very effective instrument to analyze specific situations in human relations and, from there, find the ethical debate, which must exist to address any construction of knowledge. The important thing is that these three dimensions are articulated with each other, otherwise, in the absence of articulation, relations will be unbalanced, threatened with disappearing or falling into violence…

— Different cases of figures are possible:

absence of a minimum of laws. What are the possible scenarios of this situation?

presence of laws, but without promise or recognition (gratuity or love). What are the possible scenarios of this situation?

Once again, is it possible to say that love surpasses all law?
